Camp Sunrise, a program of YouthCARE, is the site of our
ten-week residential Summer Program serving urban youth, 13-18 years
old, who face social or economic barriers. Activities at camp include
canoeing, hiking, camping, community service projects, arts and crafts,
team building, and recreational games. Intercultural activities focus
on promoting cultural and environmental appreciation and multicultural
friendships.
Job Openings
Camp Sunrise is excited to announce spring and summer
job openings. The positions available are: Program
Coordinators, Assistant Cook, Counselors,
and Assistant Counselors.
Job Components
We are looking for responsible adults (19 years old
and older) to supervise youth from diverse ethnic, cultural and racial
backgrounds. We are looking for motivated individuals who are interested
in living in a multicultural community and making a difference in
the lives of urban youth. It is not required that applicants have
previous experience working in outdoor programs. Learning new skills
is experiential for campers, staff and volunteers.
Employment at Camp Sunrise includes a week of staff orientation and
training (June 6-12, 2008) followed by a ten-week summer program (June
13-August 23, 2008). Special arrangements are possible for those staff
who are unable to work the full 11 weeks. There is also an optional
take down week at the end of the summer. Some staff positions have
part-time hours available in the spring. Please see the individual
job descriptions for this information.
Camp staff live at Camp Sunrise (on site) in comfortable high quality
platform tents with one or two other staff members. Staff members
have scheduled days off throughout the summer and every Friday evening
off. Meals and lodging are provided at no cost (to all staff). All
staff members must be trained in First Aid/CPR and Basic Water Safety.
YouthCARE provides training in these areas. Camp Sunrise will provide
all of these classes in the spring to staff members at no cost.

Position Descriptions
Youth Work Program Coordinator:
Responsible for coordinating the Camp Sunrise
youth work/service program as well as the operation and maintenance
of camp buildings, facilities, grounds, vehicles, equipment and supplies.
Duties include coordinating community service work projects for campers,
helping to manage the camp garden, leading camp set-up, making repairs
on camp equipment and supplies, maintaining camp vehicles, keeping
a current equipment inventory, and the purchasing and restocking of
equipment and supplies. Also responsible for leading daily support
staff projects, co-leading crews and participating in camp activities
as needed. Driver's license required. Pre-summer part time employment
could begin as early as May 5, 2008.
Summer Salary $360 per week.
Pre-Summer Salary $ 8.00 - 9.00 per hour.
Junior Counselor Crew Leader/Counselor:
Leads a culturally diverse crew of eight Junior
Counselors (16-18 years old) who live and work at Camp Sunrise for
ten weeks. Plans and implements leadership, outdoor and counseling
skills programs to train Junior Counselors. Program includes canoe
and backpacking trips, rock climbing, high ropes course, and other
experiential education activities. Duties also include participating
on "support staff" which includes leading camp activities,
cooking, maintenance projects, driving, and generally supporting co-workers
working with crews. Driver's license required.
Summer Salary $360 per week.
Pre-Summer Salary $ 8.00 - 9.00 per hour.
Counselors:
Rotate responsibilities on
a weekly basis between "crew" weeks and "support staff"
weeks. Crew week responsibilities include working with a co-counselor
to supervise and lead a group of eight youth participating in a three-day
canoe trip, Eco-Adventure Days to state parks, team building and community
service projects. During support staff weeks, counselors are responsible
for planning and leading camp activities, designing programs, cooking,
maintenance projects, driving, and generally supporting co-workers
working with crews. Driver's license required.
Salary $300 per week.
Assistant Counselors:
Rotate responsibilities on a weekly basis between "crew"
weeks and "support staff" weeks. During crew weeks, Assistant
Counselors are assigned to work with a Counselor to supervise and
lead a crew of eight youth on a three-day canoe trip, State Park field
trips, team building and community service projects. During support
staff weeks, Assistant Counselors assist with directing camp activities,
designing programs, cooking, completing maintenance projects and general
support of co-workers working with crews. Drivers's license preferred.
Salary $260 per week.
Assistant Cook:
Work with the Head Cook in meal preparation, menu planning, record
keeping, purchasing, crew food packing and maintenance of the kitchen,
dining room and food storage area. Opportunities are also available
to co-lead crews, plan and lead camp activities, and work in other
areas of camp. Driver's license preferred.
Salary $260 per week.
