Youth
Advisory Council Member, Paris Koehler, Represents Minnesota
Youth at the MN State Capitol and in
Washington DC!
|
|
|
|
On
April 30, 2008, Paris and other four other youth from Minnesota
shared their experiences growing up in Minnesota with our
State Representatives. Paris spoke of the importance of
out of school time funding and keeping class sizes small.
She also shared what she felt were the important topics
in this year's presidential campaign.
On
May 13 and 14, 2008 Paris represented youth from Minnesota
at the After School Challenge in Washington DC. As a representative
from Minnesota, Paris attended the conference and had the
opportunity to lobby on Capitol Hill. She met many representatives
from Minnesota and their staff, a highlight for Paris was
meeting Representative Keith Ellison from Minneapolis. Paris'
trip was sponsored by Youth Community Connections, YouthCARE,
and generous donations from many YouthCARE Board Members
and supporters. Paris had a great time learning more about
the political process and said it will be very helpful in
achieving her career goals of working in politics.

3rd Annual "Celebration of Urban Youth"

YouthCARE's
3rd Annual "Celebration of
Urban Youth" event was a great success!
Heart
warming testimonials from youth leaders and program alumni
filled the room with youthful energy. The strong voice of
keynote speaker, Dr. Reatha Clark King, urged us to continuously
collect "leadership tools" for our "tool
box" because education does not end in the classroom
but continues as we recognize the potential to learn from
every situation and from the role models in our lives. Witty
and enthusiastic guest speaker, St. Paul City Councilmember
Melvin Carter, III, reminded us to get involved and make
the changes we want to see.
We
are brimming with gratitude for the opportunity to highlight
the impressive accomplishments of the 2007-08 youth leaders
and to recognize our generous sponsors and outstanding community
partners in addition to raising over $31,000 in support
of YouthCARE's youth-led programming!
We
would like to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped
make this event happen!

YouthCARE
Came Together to Celebrate
Diversity & March for Equality on
MLK Day
|
 |
On
January 21, 2008, 50 youth, volunteers, and staff came together
in St. Paul to represent YouthCARE, to celebrate Dr. Martin
Luther King's dream, and to march for equality.
"It was awesome to see all the youth get together and
see how excited they were when they got to put on their purple
T's. I agree with what Mayor Rybak said in his speech that
we shouldn't just celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's dream
one day a year, we should celebrate it everyday!" - Millie
