St. Paul Mayor, Chris Coleman, visits YouthCARE office! St. Paul Mayor, Chris Coleman, visited the YouthCARE office on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 as part of his official “Day of Recognition for National Service.” During the visit, Mayor Coleman met with current St. Paul AmeriCorps VISTA Program volunteer, Allison Kappeyne, who currently works at YouthCARE as the Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator. The Mayor also recognized four additional AmeriCorps alumni, Sarah Gerdes, Michelle Henkelman, Isiah Jones, and Nardos Tesfalidet, that are now employed full-time at YouthCARE. Mayor Coleman thanked all the volunteers for their service, and said that he appreciated their work and commitment to the AmeriCorps programs.
While visiting the YouthCARE office, Mayor Coleman had the opportunity to meet seven youth who are active in YouthCARE programs. YouthCARE’s Community Service Stars Crew Leaders, Sou Moua and Da’Shaunte Marshall, planned activities for the mayor, his staff, and the youth, which included an icebreaker activity, and group sessions that focused on goals and creativity in life. In one of the discussions, participants shared how their life goals have changed in the past, present, and future. The Mayor expressed that he had always wanted to be a politician, even when he was a child. Mayor Coleman wrapped up the visit with words of inspiration; reminding everyone to follow their dreams and work towards their goals. Youth participants included: Selena Chapman, Eveli Constanza, JaMarcus Green, Diana Hristova, Pierre Lawhon, Mitsay Lee, and Sunny Moua.
Mayor Coleman’s visit was significant because YouthCARE is committed to providing positive multicultural activities for St. Paul and Minneapolis youth. YouthCARE programs and activities are open to youth who reside in both cities, and one of the program sites for YouthCARE’s Young Women’s Mentoring Program is located in the McDonough Community in St. Paul.
A sincere thank you to Mayor Chris Coleman for spending time with the youth and staff of YouthCARE, and for including YouthCARE in his Day of Recognition for National Service!

YouthCARE participates in the 8th Annual Soup It Up for Kids Event On November 1, 2012 several YouthCARE Board members and staff participated in the 8th Annual Soup It Up for Kids Event hosted by Cox Insurance Associates Inc. Since the Soup it Up Event began in 2004, 100% of the funds raised have gone directly to support organizations in the Twin Cities that have had a positive impact on youth. YouthCARE was honored to have been selected as one of the four organizations who received funding from the event. Many in attendance that night were moved by the words of Melvin Saballos, YAC (Youth Advisory Council) member, who in his speech stated, “my involvement with YouthCARE provided me with a voice to stand up for what I believe in, the opportunity to become a leader, and the tools and resources to succeed in life.” Funds raised from this event will go directly to support YouthCARE’s three programs: Camp Sunrise, Young Women’s Mentoring Program, and YouthLEAD. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made this event a success!
