Xia &
Pa Dao Vang
|
In Memory of
Paj Ntaub Vaj
(Pa Dao Vang)
Yug
(Birth): 12-15-1984
Tuag (Death): 02-29-2008
|
|
We are very,
very sad to announce that Pa Dao Vang, a kind, generous and
talented young woman who was a treasured member of the YouthCARE/Camp
Sunrise family, was killed in a car accident on February 29,
2008. Pa Dao was camper in 2001-02 and a junior counselor in
2003. Everyone who met Pa Dao liked her immediately. She will
be missed by her family and her friends.
Many current and former YouthCARE/Camp Sunrise
staff members and volunteers attended a recent memorial service
for Pa Dao that included photos of her years at Camp Sunrise.
The two photographs that are shown here are of Pa Dao and her
sister Xia who worked with her at Camp Sunrise during the 2003
Summer Program.
|

Pa Dao & Xia Vang
|
|
The following text was written by Pa Dao's
family and shared with those who attended the funeral and memorial
service.
Parents Words:
We, the parents of Pa Dao Vang, are proud to have her as a daughter
in the family, because we do not have to discipline her at all.
She was born as an obedient daughter who maintained a good reputation.
Now that she had left everyone, we still cannot imagine why
our luck could not protect our daughter to have a life with
a family like others. We only have the name but not the person.
Pa Dao's Character:
Pa Dao is an obedient daughter with a courageous heart. She
helped discipline her brothers and sisters and lead by example
for her friends. She lectured others to be a good person, to
listen, and to respect parents and others, and to never do anything
unrighteous. She loved her parents, took care of her younger
siblings, cooked for her family, tutored and mentored others,
and helped in whatever ways she could without a second thought.
Pa Dao would put other's concerns as a priority before considering
her own.
Pa Dao made a promise to her mother, saying
that she will work hard in school until she graduates, and will
find a good job to repay mom's difficulties of raising and caring
so that it will be worth being a mother's daughter. Unfortunately,
it cannot be completed like she had promised.
Although she is a girl, she has a daring heart
like a man. Beside constantly studying and furthering her education
she had never thought of dating nor having an intimate relationship
with anyone.
History of Pa Dao:
Pa Dao is 24 years old. Her father is Pa Sher
Vang, and her mother is Chia Lee. Pa Dao has 8 sisters and 4
brothers.
Pa Dao was born in Loos Lob Toj Xeem Thoos Khas
Nroog Moos Nas, in the village of Luang Prabang in Laos. Pa
Dao's birth mom is Bai Xiong, who passed away when Pa Dao was
only two years old. Then Chia Lee came and raised her afterward.
On December 7, 1987, Pa Dao's family moved to
Thailand. They became Hmong-Thai for a year, ending December
12, 1989. Her family moved to a refugee camp called Chiang Kum,
and lived in Chiang Kum until March 9th, 1990. Then Pa Dao's
family moved to Phab Nab Nib Khoos. They lived there until September
13, 1990, and then moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in the United
States of America.
Pa Dao started first grade at Prosperity Heights,
and attended until she was half way through fourth grade; her
family moved to West St. Paul and she completed the fourth and
half of the fifth grade at Como Park Elementary School. Again,
Pa Dao's family moved to East St. Paul. There Pa Dao completed
the fifth and sixth grade, and graduated from Nokomis Montessori
Magnet Elementary School. She completed seventh and eighth grade
at Washington Technology Junior High. She attended Harding Senior
High School, and received her diploma from there in June 2003.
Pa Dao continued her education at Southwest Minnesota State
University in Marshall, Minnesota. There she completed four
years of college and was due to complete her fifth year soon
(two months left), but unfortunately this terrible incident
happened. Pa Dao would have completed her first degree, a Bachelor's
of Sociology in May 2008. She would have completed her second
degree, a Bachelor's of Elementary Education within two more
years.
On Friday, February 29, 2008, Pa Dao was on
her way home to St. Paul from college, due to a class assignment.
Before she came home to St. Paul, she always called her parents
to let them know beforehand. At times, Pa Dao would take along
her younger sister, Xia Vang. This time there were no sign of
notices that Pa Dao was on her way home. Her death was already
confirmed when her parents were notified by the police who arrived
to their doorsteps around 2:00 P.M. Later on that day a Hmong
policeman took Pa Dao's parents to Sibley Medical Center to
identify her body. She is the loss of a beloved daughter and
friend.

Interview
with Shoua Lor & Linda Vang
YWMP Alumni Girls Group & Youth Mentor
|

1995
photos of Shoua & Linda
|
Shoua
Lor
"When
I was 7 years old, I was in Girls Group at the McDonough Community
in the Young Women's Mentoring Program. I was very active in sports
when I was young and I heard about YWMP through my friends when
I would practice and play at the McDonough Community Center."
"I
especially loved the field trips we went on. My favorite activities
were field trips to swimming pools and to Grand Slam, Easter
Egg hunts, and to going to Camp Sunrise. I definitely feel that
YWMP and YouthCARE were significant influences in my life. Girls
Group was an important part of my childhood because my parents
were really busy when I was young and they didn't have time
to take my sister and me out and to go to fun or new places."
"I
still have a relationship with Linda Vang. Linda was my Youth
Mentor when I was in group. Linda was very inspirational and
such a positive role model for me; when I grew up I wanted to
be like Linda! We still keep in touch."
Shoua
is now married and has a 2 year old daughter. She is currently
attending Des Moines Area Community College and pursuing a degree
in nursing.
|
|

Shoua with her husband and daughter

|
Linda
Vang
"I
was a YWMP Youth Mentor when I was 16-17 (1995-1996). Shoua
was involved in Girls Group with her sister, Pa. I remember
them fondly and because we all lived in the same neighborhood
they would always find reasons to come over to my house to
play (outside of Girls Group activities). I lost touch with
many of the girls when I graduated and went off to college."
"Many
years later, while I was working at Project LEAD (an alternative
high school program in St. Paul), I ran into Shoua again.
I didn't recognize her at first since she had grown from 7
to 17... but she recognized me and helped me to remember why
she looked so familiar. Long story short, she joined Project
LEAD, which is an experiential-based learning program. Throughout
the next 2 years, we got re-acquainted and became especially
close because she attended week-long excursions to earn additional
credits. For example, we took Shoua and several students mountain
biking in North Dakota for a week."
"We
kept in touch after she moved to Iowa and got married. She
periodically calls me to let me know how she's doing. Now
she is taking classes towards her college degree, so I help
her with proofreading papers/stories when she asks. These
are pictures from when Shoua and I were in group together.
Such fun memories!"
In
addition to being a Youth Mentor and camper, Linda went on
to be the Assistant Director at Camp Sunrise and now works
at the University of Minnesota.

weeks at Camp Sunrise as a Volunteer Counselor during the 1980s
and 1990s working directly with the camp staff and the campers.
He also served on the Camp Sunrise Advisory Council and helped
out with many camp projects including a key role in the restoration
of the Log Cabin Nature Center. In 1990 Tom was presented the

Rikki Stenzel (Alumni Camper, 1994 Junior
Counselor and 2000 Camp Staff) checked in recently. "Recently
I just moved back to Osaka, Japan and began working at a Jr.
High and a couple of elementary schools as an English instructor.
It's okay but what I'm really looking forward to is going back
to Hiroshima to start my new job. From April 1st, 2007 I'll
be working at Hiroshima Technical High School. I'm very exited
since I've been meaning to get back to Hiroshima for my elderly
grandparents (grandpa 95, grandma 87) and work on the legal
processes of inheriting my family's house that has been in the
family for 4 generations. Since my mother is an only child and
isn't planning on coming back to Japan and I'm also an only
child I have taken it upon myself to "protect" the
house. When I do it will skip a generation and become the 6th
generation that the house has been in the family.
Another thing that's exiting for me is that the job is one that
I've been trying for since last year. The program is in its
second year and is unique because I will NOT be teaching English,
I will be teaching IN English. Things such as science, wood
shop, gym, etc. will all be taught in English. It's a new approach
and I'm just glad to be a part of it.
On top of having family in Hiro I also have many friends and
this will be like a homecoming since I worked there for a year
about 2 years ago. I think that that's about it. My Japanese
continues to get better because it can't get any worse....and
I use it all the time. I'm still waiting for some "sunrisers"
to come out and camp at my place... Come anytime, the sliding
paper door is always open."

| FYI
.a nice poem from
Aaron Izaksonas-Smith
hey,
its been a long time, i recently got in the mood of writing
tankas (a poem consisting of alternating lines of 5-7 sylables
with to end lines of 7 sylables each). And i came up with this
one for [camp] sunrise, hope you enjoy.
morning rivers wink,
daytime rivers push and glare
evenings wrapped in mist.
canoes glide gently
in unpracticed zig-zags down
slideing gracefully
into grass lined banks and rocks
j-stroke! no, c-stroke!
faster! harder! wait! full-stop,
another river
colision, how much farther?
-we'll float for lunch, swim a bit.
then the rapids hit!
and wee! swoosh, smash, twist, rush, weee!
and now, somehow, they
are all pros with paddles, and
so soon, they go home.
and we're left to prepair camp
for another sunrise week.
warm thoughts for YouthCARE, give everyone
one my regards,
Aaron Izaksonas
